Customer
Label/converting line moving to low-odor PSA without losing instant tack or shear holding power.
Challenge
- Improve quick stick and peel while maintaining high shear.
- Reduce odor vs. rosin-ester packages.
- Run at existing line speeds and coat weights.
Approach
Replaced the rosin-ester tackifier with a hydrogenated terpene resin (R&B 100–120 °C) tuned for SIS/SEBS compatibility; modest oil trim for flow and wet-out.
Formulation window
| Component | Function | Use level | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBC polymer (SIS/SEBS) | PSA backbone | 35–55% | Choose grade for target shear. |
| Hydrogenated terpene resin | Tackifier | 25–40% | Low odor; high compatibility. |
| Plasticizing oil (white/POE) | Flow/wet-out | 5–15% | Adjust quick stick vs. shear. |
| AO package (phenolic/amine) | Stability | 0.2–0.4% | Typical AO-1010/168 blend. |
| Waxes (optional) | Block/cut | 0–2% | Die-release, converting aid. |
Processing & testing
- Melt-blend at 150–180 °C; add tackifier after polymer dissolves.
- Coat 20–40 g/m²; standard chill-roll lamination.
- Tests: PSTC-6 rolling ball, PSTC-101 peel, PSTC-107 shear; odor panel.
Results
Instant grab improved, peel increased ~10–20% with clean removability, and shear remained in-spec. Noticeable odor reduction on line and finished rolls.
